This shower cost calculator estimates the cost of taking a shower by considering main inputs, shower length, flow rate, cost of water, and cost of energy per gallon.

  • Duration of the shower (in minutes)
  • Flow rate of the showerhead (in gallons or liters per minute)
  • Cost of water (per gallon or liter)

If you take a 10-minute shower with a flow rate of 2.5 gallons per minute and the cost of water is $0.005 per gallon, the total water used would be:

Total Water Used = Duration × Flow Rate = 10 minutes × 2.5 gallons/minute = 25 gallons

The total cost of the shower would then be:

Total Cost = Total Water Used × Cost per Gallon = 25 gallons × 0.005 dollars/gallon = 0.125 dollars

Shower Cost Calculator Calculation Formula

Cost = (Water Usage × Water Rate) + (Energy Usage × Energy Rate)

Where:

  • Water Usage = Flow Rate (gallons per minute) × Duration (minutes)
  • Energy Usage = Energy required to heat water × Duration (minutes)

For example…

  • Water Usage: If a showerhead has a flow rate of 2 gallons per minute and the shower lasts 10 minutes: Water Usage = 2 gal/min × 10 min = 20 gallons
  • Water Cost: The water rate is $0.015 per gallon: Water Cost = 20 gallons × $0.015/gal = $0.30
  • Energy Usage: Assuming it takes 0.33 kWh to heat one gallon of water: Energy Usage = 20 gallons × 0.33 kWh/gal = 6.6 kWh
  • Energy Cost: Electricity costs $0.12 per kWh: Energy Cost = 6.6 kWh × $0.12/kWh = $0.792
  • Total Cost: Water Cost + Energy Cost = $0.30 + $0.792 = $1.092

How Do You Calculate the Cost of a Shower?

To calculate the cost of a shower:

  • Calculate water cost: Multiply water usage by your local water rate.
  • Estimate energy usage: Calculate the energy required to heat the water used.
  • Determine energy cost: Multiply energy usage by your local energy rate.
  • Sum up total cost: Add water cost and energy cost.

Example: Let’s say you have a 2.1 gallon per minute showerhead and take an 8-minute shower. Your water rate is $0.01 per gallon, and electricity costs $0.15 per kWh.

Water usage: 2.1 gal/min × 8 min = 16.8 gallons

Water cost: 16.8 gal × $0.01/gal = $0.168

Energy usage: 16.8 gal × 0.33 kWh/gal = 5.544 kWh

Energy cost: 5.544 kWh × $0.15/kWh = $0.8316

Total cost: $0.168 + $0.8316 = $0.9996

How Much Does a 10 Minute Shower Cost?

A 10-minute shower costs approximately $1.22.

Let’s use average figures for this example:

  • Average flow rate: 2.1 gallons per minute
  • Water rate: $0.015 per gallon
  • Energy rate: $0.13 per kWh
  • Water usage: 2.1 gal/min × 10 min = 21 gallons
  • Water cost: 21 gal × $0.015/gal = $0.315
  • Energy usage: 21 gal × 0.33 kWh/gal = 6.93 kWh
  • Energy cost: 6.93 kWh × $0.13/kWh = $0.9009
  • Total cost: $0.315 + $0.9009 = $1.2159

How Much Does a Shower Cost Per Minute?

A 10-minute shower costing $0.125

Cost per minute = Total cost / Duration
= $1.2159 / 10 minutes
= $0.12159 per minute

This means that each minute of this shower costs about 12 cents.

To calculate the cost per minute, we can divide the total cost of a shower by its duration.

How Much Does a 5 Minute Shower Cost?

A 5-minute shower would cost approximately $0.61.

Water usage: 2.1 gal/min × 5 min = 10.5 gallons

Water cost: 10.5 gal × $0.015/gal = $0.1575

Energy usage: 10.5 gal × 0.33 kWh/gal = 3.465 kWh

Energy cost: 3.465 kWh × $0.13/kWh = $0.45045

Total cost: $0.1575 + $0.45045 = $0.60795

How Much Does a 1 Hour Shower Cost?

A 1-hour shower costs approximately $7.30.

Water usage: 2.1 gal/min × 60 min = 126 gallons

Water cost: 126 gal × $0.015/gal = $1.89

Energy usage: 126 gal × 0.33 kWh/gal = 41.58 kWh

Energy cost: 41.58 kWh × $0.13/kWh = $5.4054

Total cost: $1.89 + $5.4054 = $7.2954
