Business Days Calculation Formula
Business Days = End Date - Start Date - Number of Weekends and HolidaysWhere:
- Start Date is the beginning date of the business days calculation.
- End Date is the ending date of the business days calculation.
- Weekends are the number of Saturdays and Sundays between the Start Date and End Date.
- Holidays are the number of recognized public holidays that fall between the Start Date and End Date.
If the Start Date is September 1, and the End Date is September 15, and there are 2 weekends (September 2-3 and September 9-10) and 1 holiday (Labor Day on September 2) in between, the number of business days would be:
Business Days = (September 15, 2024 – September 1, 2024) – 2 (Weekends) – 1 (Holiday)
Business Days = 14 – 2 – 1 = 11 business days
How Do You Count Business Days?
To count business days, you only consider Mondays through Fridays, excluding weekends and possibly public holidays, depending on the region.
Let’s say you need to count 3 business days starting from September 9 (Monday). You would count:
- Day 1: September 9 (Monday)
- Day 2: September 10 (Tuesday)
- Day 3: September 11 (Wednesday)
Thus, 3 business days from September 9 will be September 11.
How Long is 5 Business Days?
When calculating 5 business days, you exclude weekends and holidays:
If today is Monday, September 9, and you need to count 5 business days, you would skip the weekend. Therefore:
- Day 1: September 9 (Monday)
- Day 2: September 10 (Tuesday)
- Day 3: September 11 (Wednesday)
